The Core 4: A Simple, Foundational Skincare Routine for Everyone

Skincare has become complicated.

Social media and marketing noise. The latest and greatest products promising bigger and better results. Complicated multiple step routines. Skin flooding. Slugging. So many products. So many steps. So much advice coming at you on the daily.

If you have ever felt unsure of what your skin actually needs, you are not alone. In fact, it is the number one concern of first time clients coming into the studio for treatments or to shop.

This is where I like to begin. Not with more, but with less. With a simple, steady routine good for all skin types at every stage of life. These steps will remain the same. What may change, however, are the products you choose within each step. Those can shift as your skin or the seasons shift.

Cleanse. Hydrate. Moisturize. Protect.

I call this our Core 4.

The Core 4

A Gentle Cleanser

Healthy skin begins with this step. Cleanse every morning and evening. It is so important to gently remove dirt, oil, sunscreen, and make up for the health and appearance of your skin and also to prepare your skin for the next steps. In case your wondering if a morning cleanse is necessary, yes, it is for most all skin types. Keep in mind that we sweat, drool and shed dead skin cells as we sleep ;)

What to look for:

  • Oil or cream cleanser.

  • Non foaming or low lather formulas.

  • A finish that feels comfortable, not tight. Clean and comfortable is the goal.

If your skin skin feels squeaky tight, it is likely your cleanser is too stripping.

As your skin shifts, you might move between a lighter wash for the warmer months and a heavier one if your skin is feeling dry.

All skin types: Roccoco Botanicals Soothing Oil Cleanser

Dry skin: Epicutis Oil Cleanser or Irene Forte Almond Cleansing Milk

Oily, acne prone: Michelle Corley Pore Clearing Cleansing Oil

A Hydrating Serum with Antioxidant Support

This step helps maintain water balance and protect the skin from daily environmental stress.

What to look for:

  • Humectants such as glycerine or hyaluronic acid to draw hydration into the skin.

  • Antioxidants like vitamin C or E, or green tea extract.

Hydration supports elasticity and smoothness. Antioxidants help defend against the oxidative stress caused by sun exposure and pollution. This step adds in hydration and can strengthen the skin over time.

Our recommendation: GOOP Beauty Youth-Boost Peptide Serum

A Moisturizer Appropriate for Your Skin

Moisturizer helps seal in hydration and supports the skin barrier.

What to look for:

  • Ingredients such as ceramides that support the lipid barrier

  • Fatty acids and cholesterol to help maintain balance

  • A texture and finish you enjoy.

When properly chosen, moisture should make your skin feel settled and comfortable.

Here are a few of our top recommendations:

Dry, aging skin: Irene Forte Hibiscus Cream with Myoxinol

Normal, aging: Roccoco Botanicals Blueberry AGE Moisturizer

Acne prone: Roccoco Botanicals Eruption Emulsion

Daily SPF

Daily sun protection is one of the most important steps for long term skin health and appearance.

Find one you enjoy wearing. That matters more than anything, because consistency is what will make the greatest differnece as you age.

What to look for:

  • Broad spectrum protection- meaning it protects from both UVA and UVB rays.

  • A formula you will wear consistently

Sunscreen helps protect against premature aging, uneven pigmentation, and collagen breakdown. We don’t want any of those things!

Holy grail SPF: Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46

When to add more

For those looking for a minimal routine, this covers all bases. However, for those looking to address aging, acne or discoloration, adding in additional products will help address specific concerns. This may look like an addition of a retinoid, or perhaps a treatment serum or exfoliant containing peptides or acids. I promise, your skin will better tolerate these additions once your skin in on a steady and supportive routine.

The Core 4 remains your anchor. Everything else is built around it.

Bringing it back to basics

The Core 4 is designed to take the guesswork out of skincare. It simplifies caring for your skin in a way that truly supports it’s health. Cleanse. Hydrate. Moisturize. Protect.

A simple, foundational routine that supports your skin without over complicating it.

These four steps create a baseline. From there, we can thoughtfully introduce targeted treatments and products to address specific concerns such as aging, acne, or pigmentation.

Skincare does not need to be complicated, I promise.
